Seerat-un-Nabi ﷺ (Episode 5)

*Al-Ma'rifat Manzil*

The Quraysh did not have the power to fight such a huge army and save the Kaaba. So Hazrat Abdul Muttalib told them to take their children and cattle and move into the mountains, so that a massacre could be avoided.

Then, along with some chiefs of the Quraysh, he went to the Holy Kaaba and expressed his helplessness before Allah and prayed to Him to protect His own House Himself.

The historians have quoted the prayer verses of Hazrat Abdul Muttalib as follows:

"O Allah! A servant protects his house, so You protect Your House too,"_

"Let not tomorrow their cross and their planning overcome Your planning,"_

"Today, help Your own people against the people of the cross,"

“O my Lord! Besides You, I have no hope against them,"

"O my Lord! Protect Your Haram from them,"

After making these supplications, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib also went with the chiefs of Quraysh to the mountains where the rest of the people of Makkah were staying.

The next day, Abraha ordered an attack on Makkah and moved forward to enter the city, but surprisingly, his special elephant named "Mahmood", instead of walking towards Makkah, suddenly sat down. Despite all efforts, it did not move from its place. But when its face was turned towards Syria (Shaam), it got up and started walking, and when turned towards Yemen, it started running that way. But when they tried to make it move towards Makkah, it would not move an inch. As a result, the entire army, including the other elephants, remained stuck there waiting.

They were still stuck in this situation when the Wrath of Allah overtook them, and by the command of Allah, flocks of Ababeel birds descended upon them. Each Ababeel carried pebbles in its beak and in both its claws. Abraha and his army could not have imagined what was about to happen to them. The Ababeel came right above them and started dropping those pebbles.

Those pebbles were not just pebbles - they were the punishment of Allah. Wherever they fell on a person, they did not just wound him, but caused destruction like a small bomb. There was nowhere to hide for those who had dared to attack the House of Allah.

In a short time, Abraha, along with his army of 60,000 soldiers and 13 elephants, met his end in this rain of pebbles and became like eaten straw.

Human corpses lay everywhere in the form of shredded rags.

This incident took place in 571 AD, in the month of Muharram, near Wadi-e-Muhassab between Muzdalifah and Mina, at a place called Muhassir. The year in which this incident occurred is called *Aam-ul-Feel (The Year of the Elephant)* by the Arabs. And 50 days after this incident, the blessed birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took place.
